Chania Airport (CHQ)
Chania Airport “Ioannis Daskalogiannis” or Chania International airport, is the second busiest airport in Crete. It took its name from Ioannis Daskalogiannis, a Cretan rebel against Ottoman rule in the 18th century. The Airport today hosts domestic flights to and from Athens and Thessaloniki with Aegean Airlines and Olympic Air.
The IATA code used for the international airport of Chania is CHQ. Chania Airport provides both short-term and long-term parking spaces and it is connected with Chania and other cities on the island of Crete by public transport and taxis. Travel agencies and hotels often provide shuttle buses for their guests to get to or from the airport.
Chania Airport has just one terminal that everyone uses, whether you’re traveling to another destination in Greece or to an international location. All flights at this airport use a single asphalt runway which is 3,347 meters (or 10,982 feet) in length, and they take off throughout the day as the airport is open 24 hours.
There are many passenger airlines that operate flights from Chania Airport to locations elsewhere in Greece and many international destinations, such as Aegean Airlines, Air Serbia, Animawings, Austrian Airlines, British Airways, Brussels Airlines, Condor, easyJet, Edelweiss Air, Eurowings and Eurowings Discover, Finnair, Icelandair, Israir Airlines, Jet2.com, Lufthansa, Luxair, Norwegian Air Shuttle, Olympic Air, Ryanair, Scandinavian Airlines, Sky Express, Smartwings, Sunclass Airlines, Transavia, TUI Airways, Tus Airways and Wizz Air.
Chania Airport is the 6th busiest airport in Greece with nearly 2 million passengers.
Chania Airport operates from 1967 and is located 10 minutes by car from downtown
In addition to being a hub for passenger flights, the airport is also used throughout the year by several cargo airlines, as well as the Hellenic Air Force military branch. Based on data from 2020, at the end of that year Chania Airport was the 6th busiest of Greece’s airports, with Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos ranked the busiest.

However, it’s the most expensive option and the exact price will depend on the size and model of car, and how long you rent it.
Chania Airport Taxi: Another way to get from the airport to Chania or elsewhere is by getting a taxi from the designated pickup area outside the terminal. The exact length and cost of your journey will depend on where you’re heading on the island, but as an example, to get to Chania from the airport the average time taken will be about 25 minutes with a flat fare of €25.
Public city bus: There’s a bus available that can take you to stops in Chania and elsewhere, but you might get dropped off far from your hotel or other accommodation. You might also face limited space because you’ll be sharing the bus with other passengers.
